Our Story

About The Great Beer Kitchen

A team of cooks and craft beer enthusiasts who believe the dinner table is better when great beer is on it.

Great Beer Deserves Great Food

The Great Beer Kitchen was founded on a single, obstinate belief: that the culture around craft beer -- the care, the conversation, the reverence for ingredients and process -- deserves the same quality of food to accompany it. For too long, beer has been paired with chips or pretzels while wine gets the hollandaise and the perfectly seared duck breast. We set out to change that.

Our recipe collection spans ten categories and 95 recipes, from the simplest weeknight dinner to the most ambitious weekend project. Every recipe includes a craft beer pairing recommendation -- not because it is a gimmick, but because we have eaten these dishes this way and they are genuinely better for it.

The People in the Kitchen

A small team with large appetites and an embarrassingly strong opinion about hop profiles.

Emma Richardson
Emma Richardson
Head Chef and Co-founder

Emma trained at the Culinary Institute of America before spending six years as a sous-chef in New York. She founded The Great Beer Kitchen after a revelatory meal in a Brussels brasserie where the pairing of gueuze with moules-frites changed her perspective on what beer could do at the table.

James Thornton
James Thornton
Beer Sommelier and Co-founder

James holds a Certified Cicerone qualification and has been writing about craft beer for twelve years. He is responsible for every pairing recommendation on the site and spends an inordinate amount of time thinking about the relationship between hop bitterness and fat.

Sophie Laurent
Sophie Laurent
Recipe Developer

Sophie brings a French culinary perspective to the kitchen, having grown up in Bordeaux and trained under two Michelin-starred chefs. She is the creative force behind the tarts, gateaux, and dessert categories, and insists that a galette is always better than a pie.

Marcus Webb
Marcus Webb
Content Director

Marcus spent a decade as a food editor at a national newspaper before joining The Great Beer Kitchen. He edits every recipe, writes the blog, and is personally responsible for the beer sangria recipe -- a fact he is both proud of and slightly embarrassed by.
